What this estimator actually measures
Every consultation for laser tattoo removal eventually reaches the same question: how many sessions will this take? For years the honest answer was a shrug and a wide range. Then in 2009, dermatologists William Kirby and Alpesh Desai published a scale in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology that turned that guesswork into arithmetic. They followed 100 patients, scored each tattoo across six clinical factors, and found that the total score tracked the number of treatments needed with a strong correlation of r=0.757. Their average patient scored about 9.87 and needed about 9.91 sessions — close enough that the score itself became a usable session estimate.

The six factors, and why each one moves the number
Fitzpatrick skin type (1–6 points). Higher skin types carry more melanin, and melanin competes with tattoo ink for the laser's energy. To protect darker skin from burns and pigment changes, providers treat more conservatively — which stretches the course out. The points reflect clinical caution, not the ink.
Location (1–5 points). Removal depends on your immune system carrying shattered ink away. Areas with strong circulation near the heart — the head, neck, and upper trunk — clear faster and score lower. The hands, feet, and lower legs sit far from the heart, drain slowly, and score higher.
Ink color (1–4 points). Black absorbs almost every laser wavelength and clears best, so a black-only tattoo scores lowest. Add reds, then greens and blues, then a full palette, and the score climbs because each stubborn color often needs its own wavelength and extra passes.
Amount of ink (1–4 points). A faint amateur tattoo has little pigment to remove; a dense, saturated professional piece has a great deal. More ink means more sessions to break it all down.
Scarring (0, 1, 3, or 5 points). Pre-existing scarring from the original tattooing or prior removal attempts disrupts the skin and traps ink, making it harder to clear. The scale jumps sharply here — significant scarring adds five points on its own.
Layering (0 or 2 points). A cover-up tattoo stacks new ink on top of old, so there is literally more pigment in the skin. That earns a flat two-point penalty.
How to read your result
Your score doubles as your rough session estimate. A total of 8 or less is straightforward and tends to clear on the faster end. Around 9 to 11 is the study average — plan for roughly ten visits. From 12 to 15 you are looking at an above-average course that rewards patience. Above 15, the literature flags the tattoo as a difficult removal that may run longer than the typical range of three to twenty sessions the study observed.

What the estimate assumes — and its limits
The original study was built around Q-switched lasers (Nd:YAG and Alexandrite) with treatments spaced six to eight weeks apart to let the skin recover and the immune system clear debris between visits. Newer picosecond lasers can sometimes reduce the number of sessions, and rushing the interval can raise the risk of side effects without speeding the result.
